The mother who grew up in India, lived for a few years in England and being a widow she moved her family to the island of Corfu. It is the youngest son, Gerald Durrell, who writes the book. For him this was like living in a paradise and the book is filled with all his various escapades on which he collects all sorts of critters. But all the characters in this book are so different, starting with his siblings, his oldest brother who tries to write novels, the somewhat younger brother who loves any kind of weapons, his sister etc. Because some of the kids took the liberty to invite their foreign "friends" some situations are truly funny and then there are all the characters of the island itself. This was one of the books when I felt sad that I had finished it. Gerald Durrell writes with great wit and brings to life the Durrell family and the people of Corfu. Sometimes the science of the animals that the young Gerald collects and studies becomes a bit much, but I have to remind myself, that this is a naturalist book, not just an amusing memoir. The television version focused on the family and did not have nearly as much of the science, so that colored my attitude. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series.
